"Lord, I don't ask that I should win, but please, please don't let me finish behind Akabusi."

Innocent Egbunike's prayer at the 1988 Olympics

Character of God

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

The writer to the Hebrews is right! Unless we believe that God exists and that he is likely to answer our prayers, then there is no real point in praying. The starting point in our series on prayer is therefore to step back and reflect on who God is.

The following verses from Psalm 33 remind us who God is:
4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. 5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. 10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. 11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. 13 From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind;

Our view of God will affect how our prayers and will motivate us to pray as we recognize that he alone has the answers.

Thank God for who he is and he wants to have a relationship with you. If he is interested in you, that must include your sports life. Pray that you will be able to share that good news with sports friends.
