If I had to choose between my wife and my putter... well, I’d miss her.

Henry Blofeld, London, Hodder and Stoughton, 2017. ISBN:9781473670914

The book’s subtitle : “the innings of a lifetime with test match special” reveals the structure into which the authors reminiscences are arranged. The book is an easy read filled with amusing anecdotes. And for all of us who have spent hours in the car keeping up with cricket through TMS, the insights into how the programme works and indeed the relationships between the cast make for pleasant reading.

The author writes: “the flavour of the box, even now, is the flavour of Brian Johnston more than anyone else. The present style is a direct legacy of all that he brought to us in 1970 and developed over the next 24 years. He turned TMS into a programme that does much more than simply tell the unfolding story of a game of cricket”.

An amusing and easy read but not a deeply significant book.
