"Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play…it is war minus the shooting."

Winning Words, Curtis French, Word, Waco, 1977 No ISBN (160 pages)

The book consists of 60 devotions in the format of Bible verse, devotion, prayer. As the title suggests, the author takes a word from the verse and does from it to a sporting situation and a spiritual principle.

For example, "Let the wicked fall into their own nets"(Ps141:10) takes us to tennis, volleyball, basketball and hockey [let us ignore the fact the basketball player wants to put the ball in the net and the tennis player to avoid the need] and then to Jesus telling Peter to let down his fishing net.

"Lifting up holy hands" in 1Timothy 2:8 leads us to a discussion of players with good hands, what was in Moses' hands and a prayer that our hands would reveal Christ's love.

My problem with the approach is that is too contrived. A word is taken from a verse with no reference to the context and the same word is found in sport. There is so much in the Bible, which, understood in context, addresses sporting situations that there is no need for this contrived approach.
