"I love the sense of satisfaction that I get when I’ve done a swimming workout or race, and know that I gave my whole being and heart to God in every moment of the swim. It’s the best worship I can offer him."

Ballgefluster by Sebastian B Sander, St Johannis Druckerai, lahr, Germany, 2006 ISBN 3-501-05438 -6 (176 pages)

It is one of the great debates in the UK whether Germans have a sense of humour. This novel is living proof that they do! The book describes the life of a Christian football fan, his obsession with his team and his struggle to reconcile faith and football.

I was amused to read that the mail character in the book attends a Thursday housegroup. I persuaded my church to have housegroups on Thursday as well as the traditional Tuesday and Wednesdays - for the same reason. The Champions' League games are on Tuesday and Wedneday.

If you read German, and like football, you will enjoy this novel.
