London 2012 Training Guide: Athletics – Field Events, Jason Henderson, London, Carlton, 2012. ISBN 978-1-84732-697-3
Any book by Jason Henderson, editor of Athletics Weekly, is well worth reading. The format is three sections The Basics (general information on field events), General Training and then the meat of the book Field Disciplines in detail.
There are about 10 pages on each field event covering: history of the event, key rules, type of foot-ware, common faults and lots of simple and technical tips. In each section there is a feature on a legend of the discipline.
The book has over 40 great colour action photos – mainly from the Beijing Olympics as well as loads of drawings to illustrate technical points.
The book seems to work at different levels. The spectator can dip in and gain and insight into complexity and technicalities of the sport – and an understanding of the rules. The beginner participant can gain an understanding of the event and what is required to master it. At the same time I would be surprised if the experienced athlete did not learn things from the book.
Thoroughly recommended.
