Rugged discipleship

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 'r'.

Steve Connor, Canton, Overwhelming Victory Press, 2020. ISBN 978-1-7345001-0-3

There is good stuff in this book. I particularly enjoyed: “To disciple, and be a disciple, is to enjoy the freedom and creativity of expression, as well as to thrive within the boundaries of our external design because we are designed to worship God, to know him, and to serve him. We want to help people to love God, to worship him with reckless abandon, to know him more deeply, and to serve Him”.

However, if you are expecting a systematic book on discipleship you will be disappointed. The book consists of incidents from Steve Connor’s interesting life, at times reading like a travelog, and accounts of the interesting people who turn-up in his life. There is even a reference to myself – but I think I am confused with someone else! The nuggets on discipleship are only found after reading long accounts of the adventures.

The book is called “Rugged discipleship” and every chapter- heading includes the word “Rugged”. Examples are Rugged Ingredients, Rugged Character, Rugged Mind etc. Throughout the book we read of rugged faith, rugged truth, rugged courage, rugged friend, rugged mind, rugged friendship, rugged faith, rugged handsome man, rugged intellectualism, rugged academic, rugged designer, rugged imagery, rugged mileage, rugged thinking, rugged student, rugged commitment etc . The word “rugged” is not defined and I felt unclear at the end of the book exactly what Connor meant by it.
