All the good in sports

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 'a'.

All the Good in sports, Mike Sandrolini, Regal Books, Ventura, California, 2007

The book consists of 25 "true stories that go behind the headlines" in order to make the reader "praise God for all the good in sports". In reality, the 25 chapters are reprints of articles from Sports Spectrum magazine with a one page introduction.

As with all books on American sports, it is very American. I had heard of 9 of the 25 people featured. The best known internationally being golfers, Payne Stewart, Paul Azinger and Betsy King.

The articles - by a range of writer - are variable. They are often written in the third person with a few public domain quotes from the featured sportsperson - rather than based on an in depth interview. The "good news in sports" is mainly testimony of the sportsperson rather than in extrinsic value of sport as God's creation.

A few years ago the American Sociologist did an article on the theology of Sports Spectrum. This book gives another good insight into the relationship between American evangelicals and sport. Otherwise a quite missable book.
