Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football manager

2009 World Sports Cup

For the last 4 years Dima and Margo have organized a citywide schools' basketball tournament as part of their ministry to teenagers in the city. They wrote:

"The tournament was played in March/April 2009 with 11 school teams participating in 2 age groups - 16-17 year-olds and 11-13 year-olds. During the tournament we had opportunities to spend time not only with players and spectators, but also with the coaches. We invited them out to a coffee-shop where we discussed topics like what difficulties they face while coaching, what are the goals and interests of our youth today, etc. They also brought up their ideas what we need to change and improve in the tournament, so that it would be more effective next year.

At the Awards Ceremony, champions of the tournament received the World Sport Cup trophy, certificates and t-shirts with Champions of World Sport Cup 2009 logos. Second place teams got certificates and 2 balls for the team as well as some individual prizes. We also wanted to focus attention on the coaches and presented special "World Sport Cup 2009" notebooks to them and the book Born to Play by Stuart Weir".

Verité Sport sponsored the prizes.
