“All I know most surely about morality and obligation I owe to football”,

Albert Camus

Keeping it in context

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

As we live through unprecedented times when the buzz words are lockdown, social distancing, Zoom and cancellation, Paul’s words come as a timely reminder of the bigger picture. It is so easy for us to fix our eyes on what is seen and be obsessed by the inconvenience of life under Corona.

The cancellation/postponement of the sporting calendar is a massive disappointment for so many reasons. The 2020 Olympics should have been the culmination of years of work for many athletes. The cancellation of the sporting calendar has seen income dry up for many professionals. We miss the sheer joy of playing/running/throwing/jumping etc.

Sport has been called the “most important triviality” and for many of us it is an important part of our lives. Life is better when our team wins! None of this is bad.

Perhaps these strange days can just remind us to see the bigger picture and to focus on what is unseen, the eternal glory that God has prepared for all who love him.
