"God answers my prayers everywhere except on the golf-course."

Moses’ prayer

Moses said to the LORD… ‘You have said, “I know you by name and you have found favour with me.” If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you. Remember that this nation is your people.’ The LORD replied, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’ Exodus 33:12-14

Last week we noted Moses’ humility. Here is an example of that humility and his desire to please God. There are also some mind-blowing promises in this short passage.

Moses is able to remind God of his promise: “I know you by name and you have found favour with me.” This is a promise we can take hold of you that God knows us by name and we can experience God’s favour.

Moses then asks God: “teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favour with you”. That is a challenge to us. Do we ask God to teach us his ways? Moses had grasped that following God’s way was the way to ensure that he continued to have God’s favour.

God’s final promise is: My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. As I write that I think of athletes competing this weekend in Shanghai or Manchester, preparing for Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Eugene or wherever with the promise that God’s presence will go with them. And whatever you are doing in the near future, may you know the rest that comes only from God.
