"there has only ever been one perfect man, the Lord Jesus, and we killed him. I only missed a putt."

Berhard Langer on the 1991 Ryder Cup

Goal to go (The spiritual lessons of football)

Return to the book list for titles beginning with 'G'.

James Penrice, New York, Society of St Paul, 1994. ISBN 0-8189-0702-9

The book is, in the author’s words, “21 meditations on Christian life, using allegories from football”. The author continues, “if we examine any human institution carefully, God can be found there…there is something special about the competitive essence of sports that brings out a wealth of religious symbolism”.

An example of the approach is: “The quarterback is, in fact, the Play Book made flesh, the physical manifestation of its wisdom”.

Each chapter is replete with scripture quotations which are interpreted and applied through football analogies.

The approach is to use football to teach about Christianity. There is no attempt to integrate the two.
