"Football is not a matter of life and death, it is more important than that."

Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football manager

What is in your heart?

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like”. Luke 6:45-47

The starting point for human behaviour, according to Jesus, is what is in our heart. Do you have good things stored in your heart or evil? Our spiritual condition is shown by the things we do.

If you remember the context of this passage, Jesus goes on to tell the story of the two builders. The one who dug deep foundations and built on the rock and the one who build his house on the sand. We need to build our lives on the solid foundation of Jesus. We need to store up in our heart – integrity, love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Some people say sport develops character; others say sport reveals character. As you are in the heat of competition does your character of integrity, peace, goodness, self-control shine through? Only if you have taken the time to develop these characteristics.
